The thing about Active Child’s Pat Grossi is that… his voice throws you off the first few listens.
I know, that’s a dick thing to say. But I’m playing the honesty game, and it’s okay because at the end of the game I’m nice and say he’s amazing.
I mean, you turn on a record with a band name that just sorta screams “hip indie kid” and you expect something a bit dirtier, I guess. But then, five seconds in i’m listening to The London Philharmonic.
When I saw him open for M83, I was sorta thrown off. Not sure what I was expecting at a show involving “dream-synth from Paris”.
Basic reaction: “What the f*%k is this opera sh*t?”
But after about three songs…I dunno. It was like a trance.
You’re just into it. Because it’s really, really different. And it’s nice when someone can be different nowadays. Too often you hear people just mimick the shit out of each other. Put a dubstep on it/We’re a “The” band, etc.
Active Child’s You Are All I See honestly gets better with every listen.
If you haven’t ever listened to much Active Child…try it. It’s sorta like Brussel Sprouts.
At start? WHAT THE F*%K. A couple sprouts in? GET ME THE NEXT GODDAMN BRUSSEL SPROUT.
This remix is a free download over at the Vagrant Soundcloud page.
The whole Active Child album is available for moneys over at le iTunes.
